" you gotta make things fun! you gotta make it simple! you have to think like a 12 yrs old and help them understand!"
for a week and half now, that's pretty much all i get back from my new assoicate teacher at the internship school site.
I KNOW, KIDS FIRST, I KNOW!
My new teacher is impatient, never listens, sarcastic, hard to get along, condescending, non-appreciative, arrogant, negative, jerk.......and a terrific teacher?
Terrific?? seems like such a sharp contrast after all the bad things i could say about this person. But in all honesity, 'terrific' is probably a understatement. After spending hours watching this teach interacting with students, this teacher really is a great teacher!!! This teacher knows how to tickle the curiosity of the students and make them want to learn. This teacher shifts the learning experience and ownership back to students and avoids being teacher-centred and lecture-based lessons. This teacher encourages cooperative learning to the extreme that the students live and breathe teamwork and collaboration without even knowing it! This teacher is exactly the type of the teacher i want to be, strive to be, and yet i am nowhere close to where this teacher is.
So why do i have so much to bitch about this person? Maybe this teacher simply makes me realize how naive and inexperienced i am despite all the praise and compliments from others. Maybe this teacher simply reminds me that teaching is not about techniques, expertize, or heart, but all those things blended together. Maybe i am simply too embarrassed and crushed to find out that i've living in this delusional space where i am ready to be a 'real' teacher, and yet, i am miles away from really truly become an inspiration. And that shocking reality is simply too much to handle for a lazy bastard whose mind is already in summer mode.
So despite all the nasty remarks, i respect this teacher.
Maybe this isn't so bad that i should get a kick in the behind and really focus on what's important.
Kids first, i know.

oh stop bitching, I read all of your once-a-month-entries, just that I spend so much time writing my own I don't have energy to write you long comments.
I think that's always the case, finding that you are 'not good enough' while you are persuing something that you love. But before you know it, you'll be just as inspirational as that dude and even able to surpass that foo.
You can do it beeatch~! That's why you are still at an internship school for teaching. Learn it like a sponge, suck'em up like lemonade.
i just finished watching this japanese TV series called "菜鳥老師來報到"...in the end, when there is a new teacher comes to this school being very nervous about being a teacher and wondering if she can ever do this job well, the main character ( the old 菜鳥老師) told her: don't worry, the students will teach you"...
you know, you are just a beginner, of course you are not good...you grow with your students and learn from experience to become a good teacher... this teacher you admire so much, i am sure he is not as good when he started this job, right?...
don't worry, you will be fine...one day, you will become a great teacher and the new teachers will admire you so much that they will wish one day they will become as a great teacher as you....=)
wow...i am overwhelmed...
thank you, both of you.
i will 加油 de.
thanks, trig.. nice to hear from you man..... it's soo touching to know that your friends have faith in you..and are there to offer a pat on the shoulder when you are down.... thank you all.....
Mr Huang, here I am, another pat on your shoulder. 加油!! :)
ming's lucky to have so many pats on his shoulder, because whenever he comes home crying about his day (almost everyday, in fact, everyday) i am not always the most supportive person. i told him that this is the reality of being in a profession, so suck it up and deal with it (he's always been in arts, which was all about yourself). i've been through it too, coming home cried my eyes out about how discouraging my teacher was to me. "maybe you shouldn't be in nursing" said my teacher, was possibily the hardest thing that i've gotten in my student life. so here it is ming, maybe i've been too tough on you, but i still listen to you to give you my full attention. but until you do something about it, u'll just have to go out there and do your best. u will not get beaten by this evil A.T. of yours, because i know you are better than him. those who discourage us will see one day that we will thrive to surpass them!
