what?? We can't FAIL them??

one thing about elementary education these days that truely pisses me off is the fact that we can't fail students..

ok, you may think that i am the big meanie who 'wants' to fail students for fun~ Hear me out~ We can't fail them. Yes, WE ARE NOT ALLOWED TO FAIL THEM!! how absurb is that?? If a kid decides to exercise his or her 'right' not to participate in class or do any homework; he/she still gets a passing grade. There's absolutely no accountability seeing that there's so little i can do. Okay, i put the kids in detention, it's my own freaking lunch break that i am missing. As for them, they love to stay inside esp the weather's getting worse~ The only detention that works is after school one. Well, too bad, we ain't allowed to do that either!!! cus kids gotta catch the freaking bus!!!

so, here i am, labouring myself through the report cards and wondering that some kid somewhere is laughing his/her head off cus, again, the teacher suffers when a kid doesn't do work~

is it so?

try telling a gr. 7 kid that life is short, please live it up to the fullest. I have higher expectations. you can do it. Please be a role model.

you might as well play the piano to the cows.

So here i am, on the receiving ends of all these kids who are functioning at gr. 3-4 level in reading and math. I can't help but wonder just exactly how did it happened. Somewhere in the past, a teacher struggled with the same notion but painfully passed a kid who can't read. The kid grew up and still couldn't read, and now it's MY problem. What can i do?? "Pass the kid," the other teacher said. I guess i have very little option. and then?? two years later, the kid land in HS and still can't read? And all the sudden, he/she realizes that he/she can actually 'fail'. Schools gets gloomier, and the streets are wide open.

too late.

too bad.

now who's fault is that?

Yah.... stupid system which is stubborn. I think accountability relies on the role models and upbringing of children. Kids who have it too easy will never understand. AHHHHH, our parents are lucky that way, hehe.

does it imply that elementary school is not important?

yes...some of my kids are starting to exercise their "winter indoor recess" pass by not doing their homework....
but i've told them....the minute that the snow begins to fall....the detention will be outside....but standing against the wall so that they watch people have fun and they stand there to think about why they're not playing....hahaha

yes, i'm the a-hole teach

Actually, studies have shown that playing piano(or music) to cows increase their milk production...

Yup. Just like milking the cats in Meet the Parents :)

I am saying that sometimes good results comes unexpected. The first person who plays piano to cows probably doesn't know that it increases milk production. So just keep playing piano to your cows. Even if only one of them listens, you made a difference.
